Milgrain is often described as tiny dots along the edges of a jewelry piece. These small metal dots are used to create borders. It adds that little something extra, taking a piece of jewelry from finished to spectacularly detailed.

The term milgrain comes from the French mille-grain, translating to a thousand grains. The design, however, is actually of Southeast Asian origin, from centuries ago. Ancient artifacts from this locale have been unearthed showing the great detailed borders we now call milgrain.

Milgrain detailing, even in an estate piece, gives the jewelry an antique feel. As mentioned, the milgrain technique has been used since ancient times, but it has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity through many different decades of styles, including Edwardian and Art Deco.

Edwardian jewelry, from the earliest years of last century, saw this finely detailed accent on many of its works. Milgrain was a delicate, ornamental element that was well-suited for the designs of this opulent era. During this time, platinum was the most popular medium.

Art Deco was when milgrain was at its highest level of use in modern times, as the detailed designs started to make it to the masses in the form of white gold. The geometric designs during this era were well-suited for milgrain adornment. During this period, milgrain was often associated with wedding bands and engagement rings.
